GLOBALFOUNDRIES hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, June 30 to officially start construction of the Admin 2 office building as part of Fab 8, a new semiconductor manufacturing facility under construction at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, New York. Once completed, Fab 8 will stand as the most technologically advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility, or fab, in the world and the largest leading-edge semiconductor foundry in the United States.

The Admin 2 building is a three-story building with an “L-shaped” foot print that will be built next to the existing Fab 8 structures currently under construction, which include the Admin 1 building, the Module 1 fab building, and the Central Utility Building (CUB).  The floor plans will feature a mix of cubicles, office space, huddle rooms and conference rooms. The building is designed to ultimately accommodate up to 1,500 office workers, although the company does not expect to fit-up and equip the entire building at once.  At this time, the company plans to fit-up and equip enough space in the Admin 2 building for approximately 450 employees, or about 30 percent of the building. The remaining portions of the building interior could be fit out as needed in the future.

GF is currently developing the Admin 2 with a goal of achieving Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Summary of the Admin 2 project:

  • Project description: the Admin 2 building is a three-story building with an “L-shaped” foot print that will be built next to the existing Fab 8 structures currently under construction, which include the Admin 1 building, the Module 1 fab building, and the Central Utility Building (CUB).  The building shape matches the original master plan submission in height and mass, and the “L-shaped” plan maintains the symmetry of the original master plan.
  • Project schedule: Construction begins in June 2011 and is scheduled to be completed in August 2012.
  • Space planning: The floor plans will feature a mix of cubicles, office space, huddle rooms and conference rooms.
  • Building size: The gross square footage of the building is targeted at 221,000 SF. The first and second floors are the same size at 84,000 SF. The third floor is smaller, coming in at 53,000 SF. The building is designed to be 48 feet high, similar to the adjacent Admin 1 building.
  • Project partners: GF teamed up with IDC Architects and LeChase Construction on the design and construction services with LeChase Construction acting as the project’s general contractor.
