July 1, 2015 was a momentous day for GLOBALFOUNDRIES with the announcement of the close of the acquisition of IBM’s Microelectronics Business. As part of the deal, GF has added more than 16,000 patents and applications, making the company the holder of one of the largest semiconductor patent portfolios in the world.
Celebrations kicked off in Europe, followed by events in the U.S. and then Asia Pacific. Major celebrations featuring GF CEO Sanjay Jha and other executives, including integration lead Brian Harrison, Product Management Group leader Mike Cadigan, Jim Doyle, head of Fabs 9 and 10, and Janette Bombardier, Essex Junction site executive, were held at the two largest former IBM locations in Essex Junction, Vermont, and East Fishkill, New York. “We have strengthened our team with some of the brightest and most innovative people in the industry,” said Sanjay, who spoke about how the deal fits in with GF corporate strategy and why the acquisition and the new employees are so important to the company’s future. “We look forward to working together to develop and deliver the technologies that will make both our customers and GF successful over the long term.”
